You’re probably thinking “Do I have to?” My answer is “Yes!” Here’s why:
We will make many mistakes over our lifetime; it simply can’t be avoided no matter how hard we try. Forgetting to follow-up with a client or picking up a specially requested item at the grocery store are examples of things that sometimes fall through the cracks. So we must learn the best way to handle ourselves when we slip-up to maintain our dignity and self-esteem.
Here are a few simple steps that work most of the time:
- Admit to the error and apologize right away.
- Acknowledge the effect our actions have caused.
- Explain what we will do to fix the immediate problem.
- Describe what measures we will take to keep this from happening again.
Furthermore, do not explain the reasons behind our blunder! Doing so only makes the other party feel like we are making excuses and dampens our apology.
Keep in mind, not only does it take courage to admit when we’ve made a mistake but it also takes character to do it in a fashion the other party will respect and support.
